Nora Bell Welty has been a point of interest in our family for years.  There was the assumption that she was from Native American descent but no one would talk about it.  My aunt Connie and I have spent years trying to find her in the census reports and who her parents were.  We found that her father was John Henry Welty and her mother was Ingabe (Isabell) Winders.  Nora had a family bible with several Winders names transcribe in it.  That clue along with many others to include a marriage certificate for her parents lead us in that direction.  Of all the counties in Illinois that are not up to date with their digital conversion, Pike county is one that is years behind in the process.  So much of our research has been by snail mail or connecting with others in Pike County that could help us.  For whatever reason, John H. Welty and Ingabe Winders got divorced.  John went to Oklahoma and married a Native American woman and had two children, Roscoe and Lydia.  Ingabe got remarried to John Carr, so in the 1800 census, Nora is listed as Nora Carr.

As I said, Nora was born to John Henry Welty and Ingabe  (Isabell) Welty in Pike County, Illinois.  On July 22, 1896, she married Charles Oscar Brown, son of Richard Brown and Rebecca Jane Thomas.  Together, they had three children...

1.    Clifford Anderson Brown (November 11, 1896 - August 1980)

2.    Dale Oscar Brown (29 Sep 1902 - March 1, 1989)

3.    Helen Pauline Brown (January 6, 1905 - September 20, 2005)
