Andrew M. Carter
(April 7, 1827 - July 19, 1916)
According to my research, Andrew was married and had two children, Nellie and Rebecca, when he went to join the Union Army (D 173 Ohio Volunteer Infantry) out of Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio. That unit also listed two other Carters, Alexander and Fleming T. who I am researching to see if they are relatives. Andrew's enlistment papers read that he was born in Adams County, Ohio. After only 3 weeks, he left the army and headed to Illinois where his wife gave birth to a third daughter, Elizabeth M. Carter in 1865. Either his wife Sienda died or they were divorced because on December 1, 1868 in Lewistown, Fulton County, Illinois, Andrew married his second wife, Martha Ruark.
